The Thousand Oaks City Council has unanimously approved the sale of the Hillcrest Center, located at 401 and 403 West Hillcrest Drive, to the Conejo Recreation and Park District (CRPD) for $30.4 million. This decision ensures the property remains dedicated to public use and open space for the next 30 years.
The Hillcrest Center, a former city hall and locally designated landmark, along with its adjacent open space, will continue to serve the community under CRPD’s stewardship. The development agreement accompanying the sale preserves the site’s existing land-use designations, allowing CRPD to manage and enhance the property while maintaining its public and recreational purposes.
Deputy City Manager Akbar Alakhan highlighted that the sale follows independent appraisals and a tentative agreement between city and CRPD staff. The six-month escrow period is set to conclude on July 13, 2026. Additionally, the agreement permits CRPD to leverage the property’s value for financing the acquisition, ensuring the district can effectively manage and develop the site for community benefit.
This strategic move by the City Council reflects a commitment to preserving Thousand Oaks’ open spaces and providing residents with accessible recreational facilities. By transferring ownership to CRPD, the city aims to enhance the community’s quality of life while safeguarding the area’s natural beauty and historical significance.
